Safety directives from various agencies have changed over the years to reflect the many scientific advances we have made as a society for our workforce, the environment, and a company’s facility. That’s why its essential to make sure that your current LFL system is operating up to code and under the safest conditions possible. If your system was up to date in 1980 chances are it might need to be upgraded to be considered safe under the applicable 2014 codes, regulations or standards. As an added incentive, you might even find that by upgrading your LFL System to a meet these requirements your facility can be more efficient and productive.
- An Example: According to one of the US Department Of Energy’s Best Practices Tip Sheets, in the case of process ovens, “National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) guidelines require the removal of significant amounts of exhaust air to maintain a safe, low-vapor solvent concentration. However, the safety ventilation ratios are significantly lower when LFL monitoring equipment is used than when such equipment is absent. This lowers the energy requirements for the process because less air needs to be exhausted to keep the process from becoming flammable”.
So in this particular process heating application, by upgrading your LFL system to meet these guidelines, you can reduce your ratio, improve the efficiency of the solvent removal process and significantly reduce the exhaust and energy requirements. This can lead to dramatic annual savings, quickly recouping the cost it took to make the upgrade.
LFL monitoring equipment employs many different technologies which meet the requirements of many different agency’s regulations. Finding the one that’s right for your application is ultimately what will keep your employees and environment safe and productive.
